Olympic update day 1

Olympic Widget by Widgia

Since I'm a huge fan of the Olympics I will be constantly updating about all of the highlights of the 2010 Vancouver Games!  The games got off to a good start with speed skating and skiing mostly on day 1.  Apolo Ohno is the most popular US athlete and could cement himself as the most successful American winter Olympian of all time by the end of these games.  He was in action on the first full day of competition and seemed on track to dominate.   However had to settle for the silver medal in the final race of the day.  He almost finished 4th but on the last turn of the race two Korean skaters, who were 2nd and 3rd at the time, crashed into each other and handing Ohno the silver medal.  The best story in this race was the bronze medalist who was 19 year old American Skater, J.R. Celski.   In the Freestyle Skiing - Ladies' Moguls Hannah Kearney and Shannon Barhke took gold and bronze helping the US dominate the event!  All together a solid start for our American Teams!

  1. Because The Winter Olympics occurs only once every four years I find myself drawn to the Games. Except for hockey, normally I would not pay any attention to these sports outside the Olympics. But I find myself watching the speed skating, all the skiing, ice skating, and curling which is strange but in the Winter Olympics it is very interesting. I guess the Olympic sports for the most part are just unique and when viewed infrequently take on a special aura. Who can forget the US Ice Hockey team winning gold at Lake Placid in 1980 Winter Olympics. What may be so special about the Olympics is that for most of the sports there is little national exposure in the US and the athletes work for 4 years to qualify for that one moment they can compete on the world stage. Think of the dedication it takes to train every day and routinely compete outside the media spotlight for that one opportunity to compete in the Games, that for most comes once in a lifetime. The Olympics is about the preparation, hard work, and the determination to compete for the opportunity to be the best in the world in your sport. There is always something special about the Olympics.

  2. I agree, the Olympics are unique in that the most of the sports aren't highly followed any other time. I also really enjoy the Olympics because the team you pull for is your home country which makes it even more special and brings the USA close together! As usual I will be watching the games intensely, GO USA!!!
