We upset Butler 88-73 in YUM Center opener!!!

I will be honest with you, going into this game I was pretty uncertain on not only how we would perform in this game but also how this whole season will unfold.  I mean after losing our top recruit to UK and our 2nd best recruit to grades we were left with the smallest incoming class I can ever remember us having.  So my first thought of this season was that we would be lacking our usual depth on the team.  Well, it turns out that I was wrong about that, thankfully!  Turns out we played with better depth and more as a team in this season opener than we did all of last year!  The stand out player of the game was Rakeem Buckles who I said all last year would end up being our new Earl Clark!  Elisha Justice was the most impressive freshman of the night looking very comfortable running point especially in the late minutes.  Bottom line is we are young an inexperienced but there is clearly something special about this group.  They play with a spark and seem too work well together.  Lets hope there is more to come of this for the rest of the 2010-11.  Go Cards!!!

Congrats!

As we say goodbye to the 2010 MLB season I have to give it up to the San Francisco Giants!  As much as I may hate them and as much as this hurts to say, I have to congratulate them on their MLB championship.  They for sure deserve it for blowing out the Texas Rangers who didn't even show up to play.  The Giants pitching in this World Series was unbelievable and the key to their victory.  It was a great season and can't wait for next year!

Game 1 to San Fran!

In a game that had 12 pitchers and 18 runs combined, the Giants thrashed the Rangers to take an 1-0 lead in the 2010 World Series!  After going up 2-0 by the second inning I think we all thought Cliff Lee would go on his usual auto-pilot and have no problem taking game one.  However after he hit a double in the 2nd inning, nothing would go right for him after that.  He was pulled after 5 innings giving up 8 hits and 6 runs.  Not at all what we expected to see.  I mean come on who would have thought a game started by Lee and Lincecum would end with an 11-7 score!  Either way it was a great start to what should be a great World Series!  Game 2 starts right now!  Updates to come...

A good hard fight for the Keg of Nails! Louisville 27 Cincy 35!

Well unfortunately our Cards lose another game on the year to drop us to 3-3 on the year, right at .500.  You could look at this as a negative or you can look at it like me and think about how much better we are compared to the past 3 years!  We look like a confident and well ran winning team now!  Even though it would have been amazing to take back the "keg of nails" at least we now know for sure our team is back on track!  We are finally lighting up the scoreboard like a traditional Cardinal team!  Our running game is amazing thanks to Balil Powell who had 209 yards and 2 TDs!  Adam Froman has settled in and is starting to become much more accurate and seems pretty comfortable in there now!  A loss is never a good thing but I think we can take a lot of positive away from this one and use the motivation/momentum towards next weeks match up.  Stay Strong! Go Cards!

Yankees take game 1, really???

On a night when President Nolan Ryan threw out the first pitch, a perfect fast ball I must say, the Rangers who were up 5-0 in the 7th let an easy win slip away in the 8th.  After a 3 run blast from Josh Hamilton in the bottom of the 1st I was loving watching C. C. Sabathia melt down that early in the game.  After adding 2 more runs I thought, wow the Rangers are gonna take this first game of the series and put themselves in great shape going into game 2.  However deep down I knew that it was the Yankees who you can never count out and the next thing you know it was the 8th inning.  Talk about falling apart! After C.J. Wilson, who pitched great for 7 innings, was pulled the meltdown/come-back begun.  Once the Yankees grabbed a 6-5 lead in the 8th I knew it was a done deal and couldn't be any more mad! The Rangers are the only team left that I don't hate so you can imagine how hard I'm pulling for them! Game 2 starts now, update to follow! Go Rangers!

The Road to the World Series!!!

For those of you know me, you can imagine how bummed I am with which teams remain in the playoffs this year.  A quick rundown of this would be as follows: I have never in my life liked the Yankees, I hate the Phillies because their fans are awful and they knocked the Dodgers out of the playoffs the past 2 years, and I hate the Giants for obvious reasons.  However I realized last night that I was complaining way too much.  As a MLB fan I have no right to bitch and moan about what will turn out to be some amazing baseball series.  Plus I can pull for the Rangers and Nolan Ryan, haha!  So with that being said lets have some playoff fun and enjoy what we've been left with(even if it is the evil empires against each other).  Below is a list of the games!

Too Many Injuries...

Wow I had a feeling something like this would happen coming into a season where my Green Bay Packers were on everyone's super bowl watch list but DANG!  Even at the start of this season the Packers had some defensive players who were injured but through the first 5 weeks of the 2010 season it's clear that for the Packers to recover and get back on track, we must either get healthier or have back-up players step up big for us.  The worst of the week 5 injuries has to be TE Jermichael Fenley who is most likely out for the season with a bum knee.  Not to mention QB Aaron Rodgers suffering a concussion which could keep him out at least this coming Sunday.  Also our league leader in sacks, LB Clay Mathews Jr, also was hurt this past week and is unsure how much time he will miss.  All of this coming after RB Ryan Grant was knocked out for the year in week 2.  There are other injuries I'm leaving out but you can see where I'm coming from with my concerns for the rest of this season.  We aren't quite ready to hit the panic button considering we are 3-2 and not in too bad of shape yet.  However If we can't get healthy on both sides of the ball and stop getting penalized so much, it might start to get ugly.  Either way I will be there pulling for the Pack just like always.  Win or lose! Go Packers!

Brad Plays A.D.

This is an open letter to all 2011 incoming freshmen who have the University of Louisville on their list of possible schools.  Join us, help us, win with us, go off with us!  Our school has an unbelievable tradition on winning, education, NBA draft possibilities, and the best fans you will find anywhere.  When you play for us, you become a life-long Cardinal and we will never forget that.  You will always have a home here.  So far our 2011 class is looking great and if we could add you to the team we have an outstanding chance at a national championship!  The time is now, we/you need a championship! We are hungry as a team and a Cardinal family.  All I'm saying is that you all are the best of the best and we are ready to welcome you to the Cardinal family! Lets take over the game, together!!!!

Thanks,

Brad Magers

Nooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!

I had a feeling that in week 1 of the NFL season the Packers would suffer a injury to a key player, since there was a good amount of hype on the team coming into the season.  What do you know, Ryan Grant our starting RB is officially out for the season.  Unfortunately we aren't a "RB by committee" kind of team and in fact lack depth at that position so this will most likely hurt.  The only thing I can see as a positive here is that at least it wasn't Aaron Rodgers and that I picked up Brandon Jackson(new starting RB) in 3 of my fantasy leagues!  Oh well we must move forward and focus on beating the Bills this week!

My NFL preseason thoughts and predictions.

Alright so its well documented and a known fact that I'm an absolute NFL freak, which was recently confirmed by my involvement in 4 NFL fantasy leagues this year.  As I do feel a bit silly looking back on how much I prepared for my drafts this year I do feel that the work will pay of in the end, literally!  Although I'm still officially in baseball mode, it doesn't take much for me to get super excited about the upcoming NFL season.  As I watch preseason games, draft for fantasy leagues, as well as watch shows like "hard knocks" and "NFL Live" I can't help but to get super pumped for football.  Obviously the most exciting part for me so far is the promise of my Green Bay Packers.  For those of you who don't know me I'm a long time HUGE Packers fan and have been since I was very young.  Can't wait to see my team go off this season!  I do have a few predictions for this upcoming season after evaluating all of the factors such as the many trades, injuries, disappointing players, and hold-outs.  My list of teams that I feel  will do well this year and are worth talking about are the 49ers, Packers, Texans, Ravens, and Dolphins.  My list of teams that will fall apart this year are the Jets, Cardinals, Vikings, and Eagles.  I think some of these teams people are super excited to see are going to flop and there are some sleeper teams that will do very well from what I can see so far through this preseason.  Two players who, to me, look as if they should not be starting NFL as QBs are Matt Leinart and Mark Sanchez.  Expect to see Derek Anderson and Mark Brunell in those rolls by mid-season.  Also I must mention my main man Michael Bush(Louisville Cardinal) of the Oakland Raiders who looks like he will finally get a chance to shine in a large roll this season despite his recently broken thumb.  Anyways many more NFL updates to come but I want to leave you with my 2010 preseason conference/divisional predictions! Please feel free to re-post your picks and/or comments on mine!

Worthless...

Yes we must talk about this ridiculous situation even though this sort of thing should never even happen in professional sports.  Can you believe that Albert Haynesworth has now failed the Washington Redskins minimal conditioning test 3 times in 5 days?  This guy is worthless, I first saw signs of this when he stomped on an opposing players head after his helmet had come off while playing for the Titans and was later suspended for the rest of that season.  I just can't believe that an adult who is getting paid $100M+ would consistently fail a test that we could all pass.  Keep in mind that he wouldn't even have to take this test if he would have shown up to camp on time(held out in protest of the new defensive system).  All I know if I were getting that kind of money I would shut up and do my job.  My conclusion = worthless, ungrateful, over-paid, etc...

Too Little, Too Late...

This is what happens when you let all the really good deals/trades pass you by and wait until the last minute and just take whomever you can get.  Don't get me wrong, having Ted Lilly, Ryan Theriot, and Octavio Dotel will for sure help The Dodgers a bit.  However while waiting/passing on the better trades that we should have made, we have dug a whole in which I don't think we will get out of.  I know I shouldn't be so negative because these are good players that we are getting,  I just don't like the timing especially while its looking like our season has slipped away.  By the way in total we lost Blake Dewitt, minor leaguers, and cash in these trades which isn't so bad.  Anyways there were, as expected, many other last minute trades to go on this past week in MLB.  Check them all out by clicking here!

T.O. to Cincy!

Ok so I know a lot of people are annoyed and mad about the T.O. free agency circus which seems to play out the same every year(bouncing team to team).  I however, 100% back the Bengals in this decision!  I know T.O. has caused problems before and that he and Chad Johnson have similar wild personalities but I feel like this will work out.  I think T.O. is finally a team player.  I think the fact that he agreed to a 1 year/2 million dollar deal shows that.  Plus last year when he was on a losing team with no QB as well as not getting the ball much, he didn't cause any problems.  I know that Cincy has been know lately as the team with all the trouble makers but I think this is going to be a great season for the defending AFC North regular season champs!  The Bengals happen to be in my top 3 favorite teams so this might be a bit of wishful thinking but I do believe it will be a great season for them!

Matt Garza Throws The Tampa Bay Rays First Ever No-Hitter!

So I just finished watching this espn monday night featured game and I have to give it up to Matt Garza.  One heck of a pitched game, congrats! That's the fifth no-no of the season, even though there should have been a sixth.  Great season so far and so much is left to be played!!!

Louisville players in the NFL

So I know it's a little early and don't get me wrong I'm still in full-on baseball mode, but I can't help getting excited as we inch closer to the 2010 NFL season.  The best part of the current NFL news that has been circulating is that of our former Louisville Cardinal players!
I have start off talking about our main man Elvis Dumervil and his new monster of a contract.  During the off-season Elvis signed a free agent contract for a record(lineman) $61.5 million with $43.1 in guarantees!  The best part about this is the way in which Elvis went about acquiring this deal.  He didn't complain to owners/coaches, hold out, blame anyone, or ask for a trade.  He staying quiet and played his way into earning this deal! I have so much respect for that and him.  Way to go Elvis!
Next up is all of our favorite hometown hero, Brian Brohm.  After a horrible tenure in Green Bay, Brian was lucky enough to jump on with the Buffalo Bills mid-season last year.  He now has an outside shot at the starting QB job for 2010.  According to the new Bills head coach, Chan Gailey, Brohm has a good shot at winning the starting job over Trent Edwards and Ryan Fitzpatrick.  I'm sure more news will come soon as pre-season camps begin but supposedly Gailey has been watching Brohm's every move and neglecting the other QB candidates!

The Atlanta Falcons have a lot invested in former Louisville players Chris Redman and Harry Douglas!  Redman who started 3 games in 2009, for a hurt Matt Ryan, was a standout and earned himself a backup QB roll for the 2010 season.  Also WR Harry Douglas is back after missing the 2009 season to injury and is still on the Falcons radar who haven't forgotten his great rookie year in 2008.  He will start the season in a 3rd WR option with the possibility of challenging for the 2nd spot!

Another team that is UofL heavy is the Carolina Panthers.  Ex-Cardinal QB Hunter Cantwell will start the 2010 season as the back-up QB for Carolina.  Also TE Gary Barnage will get playing time as the team has 3 total TE's who will rotate for playing time.  Barnage had a solid first season last year with 20 catches averaging an awesome 20 yards per reception!  Rookie Trent Guy is also on the pre-season roster and will be fight for a WR spot on the 2010 team!
Last but most definitely not least is my favorite RB Michael Bush.  Although still not getting the respect he should, Bush will start the 2010 season as the #2 RB for the Raiders and looks to get much more playing time this season.  The word is that he will also be running the teams 3rd down wildcat offensive attack. Every write-up I've read on the RB situation in Oakland says Bush is a better overall RB but Mcfadden will still be #1 due to his contract.  I do have a prediction though and mark my words! Bush will be the starting RB by mid-season!

Other notable former University of Louisville players in the NFL:

    1.    David Akers    Philadelphia Eagles
    2.    Deion Branch   Seattle Seahawks wide receiver.
    3.    Brian Brohm    Buffalo Bills quarterback 2009-current

Kershaw gets a shutout in a 1-0 Dodgers win!

Dodgers get another win against the Mets today and move back into 3rd place in the NL West.  Kershaw had a great day allowing 0 runs!  Still much more work to be done and very important series coming up including 7 games against the Padres in 10 days.  Still 6 back from SD who is still holding on to 1st place.  Go Dodgers!
Casey Blake scoring todays winning run!

This week at Dodger Stadium! Think Blue!

Now that I'm finally home on a bit of time off, I have really been able to make it to a lot of Dodgers games!  I saw some of the Cubs series as well as games against the Giants and Mets.  Even though we have had some problems lately which are mostly pitcher related(middle relief), I still believe we are in a favorable position to get back in contention with SD.  Anyways more Dodgers updates to follow but below are a few photos I took in the past few weeks!

McMurray wins Brickyard and Daytona in the same year!!!

In a race that was dominated by pole setter Juan Pablo Montoya, Jamie McMurray pulls out a win after a great two tire pit stop call! It was a very hot race day where lots of cars over-heated as well as blew out lots of tires.  Glad that my driver Kurt Busch found his way into the top 10 at the end of the race!

Once again and for the second year in a row, the Los Angeles Lakers are NBA Champions!  I was so happy to see them take the Boston Celtics especially since it went to a game 7! I'm a bit late writing this but while I sit in my London hotel room I figured it was time I said congrats to the champs once again!!!!

Catching up...

Hey friends how is everyone? Sorry I have been MIA when it comes to blogging but I was overseas for the past few months and had limited wifi/sports info.  Anyways I'm back and ready to get back on the blogging train.  Here are some updates on current events!

LAKERS vs CELTICS!

So far this has been a great NBA finals match-up.  It doesn't get much better than LA vs Boston, such a great rivalry!  I watched game one in the lobby of a hotel in Berlin at 3am but luckily was back in the states by game 2.  Kobe has averaged his usual 27-29ish PPG but some of the other top players on both teams haven't been as consistent as expected.  However Ray Allen did have and amazing game 2 or at least a great first half in that game.  Players like Nate Robinson, Glen "Big Baby" Davis, and other bench players have been lights out and keeping things close.  Look for the game 5 to be a shoot out with all the big stars being involved!

Dodgers take over first place...

only to give back to the Padres yesterday.  Either way the Dodgers are having a solid season and should stay in a fight for first place the remainder of the season.  I made it to a game the other night finally after being out of town so long(too late in the season to be my first attended Dodgers game).  It was awesome because it was the third and final game of the series against the Cardinals who we beat that night to complete a sweep.

2010 World Cup

Worth mentioning but I really can't get into Soccer/Futbol.  I love America however so I will be watching and rooting for the USA harder than anyone!  Also Nike sent us the real deal USA jersey's to wear! Pretty cool!!!

Kurt Busch!

While away looks like my Nascar driver, Kurt Busch, racked up a couple of wins as well as a ton of top 5 and top 10 finishes!  This puts him in 4th place in the overall cup standings and only a few hundred points out of first!  Go Kurt!

First MLB game of the year!!!

So yesterday on our day off in Denver we decided to catch the Mets vs. Rockies game at Coors Field!  It was my first game of the 2010 season and my first time ever at Coors Field.  Their were 15 of us that went so our actual tickets were deep in the outfield but after a few innings we just walked around the stadium checking out views from all around.  The Mets made the Rockies look pretty bad and won 5-0 but we all still had a great time.  I taught some of the guys how to eat whole peanuts which they thought was crazy, haha.  Anyways here are a few pics from the game!

BASEBALL!!!!!!

Baseball season is finally here!  Sorry tour has kept me from blogging pretty much at all over the past month. I am however excited that the start of the baseball season has been awesome so far.  We had a great day off somewhere strange in Kansas yesterday and got to tailgate outside of our bus while watching the first Dodgers home game of the year, which they won by the way!  Homers by Manny, Kemp, Either, and Blake helped the Dodgers grab their first home win of the season.  So excited for the rest of the baseball season but I won't leave out the upcoming NBA and NHL post seasons which will be well worth watching also.  Lots of great sports coming up in these next few weeks! GO DODGERS!!!
